It’s the wedding day of Mara Brankovich, the daughter of the Serbian Despot. She’s waiting for her new husband Sultan Murad II in the royal chamber of the Edirne Palace. Mara would never herself bear an heir to the Ottoman throne. Instead, she would become the most important character in the life of the Sultan’s son by another woman—Mehmed, the future Conqueror of Constantinople. Mara would live to assist him in this task by sending all the counterintelligence he needed from the Serbian palace.
