GERALD (JERRY) BARNES, USA

Since early childhood in Ireland, images of far-flung places have always intrigued me. The photos taken by my father, a world traveler, fascinated me. Working for a small brewery, he’d give me the stamps from letters he received from overseas suppliers. They became my window on a bigger world. Working in mixed media collage lets me pull diverse images together and re-size, distort, and enhance them. They come from a variety of places— stuff I collect from my travels, photos I take, books, magazines, old banknotes, and, yes, stamps. Often by the time I use them, I’ve forgotten the source. Of course, sometimes I also create my own. My work generally involves history, travel, and social commentary. But they’re not always serious. Sometimes you just want to have a little fun bringing color and images together!
