Making Waves
This work is based on a red antique Chinese vase from a museum archive, that had a fish detail in its glaze. This sculpture reflects the fish by simulating the sinusoidal motion of a fish through water. The neck of the vase represents the fish’s fin oscillating in a different plane to its body. The bulb of the vase is reminiscent of antique glass buoys. The string is used as a play on this nautical theme, representing the rope that links the buoys together. These buoys were traditionally used to float nets to catch fish—in the same way the fish detail was captured in the original vase. The colors are based on goldfish in my garden pond.
