Ancient City of Kashgar

Oil on canvas, 99 x 89 cm, 5000 USD

This is a scene from a corner of 2,000-year-old Kashgar. When I visited in 2006-07, I felt as if I had traveled back in time as I wandered the narrow streets of this ancient Silk Road oasis city. Its distinctive multi-story houses are made from a unique type of clay that’s dried for a long time in a special tandoor (oven). Sadly, much of the Old City has been replaced in recent years with a “new” Old City as part of a modernization project.
