eRace #4

Acrylic, latex, grease marker & spray paint on canvas, 56” x 36”, Artist’s Collection

This project was completed soon after the murder of Trayvon Martin. At the time, I was working on multiples in this series, and his tragic death inspired this piece. It’s a celebration of his life, and also draws attention to how information gets disseminated. The dominant narrative gets shaped by only a few. Who gets to tell who’s story?

Curator’s Note: Trayvon Martin, a 17-year-old African-American youth, was shot to death in Florida by George Zimmerman, a neighborhood watchman. Zimmerman’s subsequent acquittal in court sparked the #BlackLivesMatter movement.
