Elvis Was a Hero to Some…

Acrylic, latex, spray paint & oil pastel on wood panel, 60” x 48”, 6,000 USD

This work was completed a few months prior to the uprisings sparked by George Floyd’s murder. This is important for me to note because it feels as though it foreshadowed what was to come. It also exhibits the constant state of resistance we have practiced in our American lives, and the questioning of hegemony and the dominant narrative. The title of the piece is based on a song by the hip-hop group Public Enemy that was a fundamental inspiration to me as a teenager growing up in Los Angeles.

Curator’s Note: George Floyd, an African-American man, was murdered in 2020 by a White police officer during his arrest. His murder led to worldwide protests against police brutality, police racism, and lack of police accountability.
