Ain’t No Future in Yo’ Frontin’

Acrylic, latex & spray paint on canvas, 40” x 30”, 4,000 USD

This is the last of a series of works I did that explore the notion of erasure. This painting references a song by American rapper MC Breed that describes painting America’s White House black. In earlier works, all of the underpainting was being whitewashed over. So, in homage, this painting became the black version, flipping the original metaphor. Covering the image in black is a way of taking back power for Black and Indigenous communities, rather than expressing the damage or historic erasure of these marginalized groups. The statue is of Pedro de Valdivia, one of the earliest colonizers of Chile, where my family is from.
