500 Years Per Ounce: Theatre of the Spectacle

Acrylic, latex, spray paint, gold leaf & glitter on paper, 72” x 120”, Cheech Marin Collection

This work was inspired by bling culture. There’s such a deeply rooted problematic and blood drenched history around gold and wealth, that I wanted to create a visual intersection that interested me. Working on this large piece of paper was very satisfying, and allowed me to use the physicality of my whole body to complete it.

Curator’s Note: Bling-bling (shortened to ‘bling’) refers to the aesthetic of wearing ostentatious jewelry, popularized by American hip-hop artists in the 1980s.
