RubaDub
Roots reggae reflected the political turbulence in Jamaica in the 1970s, and took inspiration from Rastafarianism. Rub-a-dub, which followed in the 80s, is quite different. Its sound and lyrics are less deep, less protesting, and lack spirituality. The message is no longer the priority. The time had come for entertainment. This style also saw the advent of deejays, and ‘toasters’ like U-Roy, who talked to the music’s rhythms rather than sang.
