This painting honors female Alutiiq ancestors who, under the siege of colonization, married Russians. Despite the pressure to assimilate, some were able to pass on to future generations their indigenous knowledge and traditions. The child holds an artifact—a shaman doll found in the “Karluk One” archaeological site.
